Type 90 in winter camo

Silver medal

Awarded: Silver

By: Eyal Reinfeld

Manufacturer(s): Trumpeter

Modifications: Scratchbuilt the headlight cages and mudguards from platicard. Tarps and white covers are from magic sculpts, as well as the coats on the figures. The antennae are metal rods, and the skis are also plasticard. The black straps are dental floss.

After-market parts: The decals are from Archer fine transfers, taken from their Sherman shipping stencils set for 1:35. The Snow is artificial snow set from Signifer.

Description: The model is from Trumpeter and the scheme is based on a picture which can be seen in a site called TANK-GUY, showing a type 90 JGSDF tank painted in a unique winter camo. I tried to work according to the photo, but did a different tank (mine is 34 and the noe in the picture is 31) to explain the differences. Hopefully an article will be posted showing the build in detail in MilMod site.

Simply beautiful! Clean build and great painting. The tarps are especially well done an have that convincing sag. Painting is great - couls jsut use a bit more weathering. I am not familiar with this tank, but there might be a bit more exhaust on the engine deck(?) But the first rate painting and build make this a real stunner!

The build of this model is very nice, clean and accurate. You did a fine job with the canvas. Base colors are well applied. I found the picture you mentioned. As I saw the Japanese applied larger spots here and there, so they covered a larger area with white than you. It's a problem only beacuse you did not apply any weathering under the white camo. I would suggest you using some washes, some highlihts and shadows, to make the model more spectacular. One more little thing that you didn't paint the metalic waer on the track, as it is visible on the photos of the original vehicle. Anyway it's a brilliant idea, a very special subject, and a quite good construction.

simple and straigth assembly OOTB. I like the way in wich you have reproduced the white tarps. Painting this kind of camouflage is a challenge you faced very well, even if I noticed a lack o f white spots on some areas like the turret sides. Weathering is ligth and appropriate for a moder MBT in a modern Army, only above the white spots in some locations (engine grills, for example...) I would have add just a littel more depth. Very nice and very striking!
