Bronze medal

Awarded: Bronze

By: Fernando Cuenca

Manufacturer(s): Dragon, Preiser

Modifications: Replacement of the levers in the driver's compartment with wire and small plastic bits. The rudimentary sight was scratchbuilt with leftover PE and wire. The basic shape of the base was designed in Solidworks 3D modeling software and printed on a 3D printer. Except from that it is OOB.

Description: The model depicts a vehicle from an unknown unit in the Eastern Front 1945. Paints are Tamiya acrylics. Filters followed by a pin wash with oils were done first. Then post shading in an airbrush of the running gear and tracks. Scratches and chipping were done with a 000 paintbrush and using the scouring pad technique. Mud is a mixture of artist pigments, plaster and acrylic medium. The base was covered with celluclay and painted. All the vegetation comes from Woodland Scenics. The figures are from Preiser, two of them modified, painted with acrylics with oil washes, drybrushing and pigments.

A good solid build of the vehicle. The base is very nicely done, but unfortunately this can't be judged as part of this month's competition. The general paintwork is very good and the paint chips and scratches are subtle and in scale. Further weathering / shading would improve the model though, as it looks a little flat. This is especially important for single colour vehicles. Stronger filters / more general washes and some dark pin washes around the details would all help to break up the single colour.

This is nicely done. The weathering is subdued but effective, and the scale fidelity of the chipping adds that bit of finesse to the general impression of the model. The basic painting is nice but could benefit from just a little more depth. Though I’m not a proponent of heavily contrasting washes in most areas on a model, I think that a bit more contrast in this case, would bring this scheme to life some more, and help add that tiny bit more depth to the finish. Some rain staining or other localized staining might help this a bit too. The only other very minor thing that I note is that the tow rope on the front of the vehicle looks a wee bit “furry”, though this may be more apparent in the photography than to the naked eye, due to the “macro” nature of the photography. I think an excellent effort was put in to making this model, which has yielded nice results. Wayne

Apparently a very well built model, it is difficult to be sure from the single in progress picture. The rocket launcher frames look well aligned and there are plenty of interesting details. The paint scheme, while both very well executed and highly appropriate, is rather bland and unexciting to the eye, stronger shading would bring the model to life. The woodwork on some of the pioneer tools is rather unconvincing, looking very much like painted plastic. Weathering appears to be generally well done conveying a rather dusty feel.
